Breast Augmentation

BREAST AUGMENTATION

A breast augmentation (“augmentation mammaplasty”) is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States. This surgical procedure can enhance the shape and volume of the breasts with the use of either saline or silicone implants. Through breast augmentation, the symmetry of the breasts can also be improved.

BREAST AUGMENTATION CANDIDATES

Ideal candidates for a breast augmentation are women who are in good overall health and wish to increase the size or restore the shape of their breasts. Candidates should always undergo surgery for their own personal reasons, and not because of pressure from others.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

A breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The incision site and the type of implant will determine how long the procedure takes. There are two types of breast implants: saline and silicone.

  • Saline – An empty silicone shell implant will be inserted and then filled with a salt water solution (saline).
  • Silicone – FDA-approved silicone shell implants that are already pre-filled with a silicone gel before they are inserted.

During your initial consultation, plastic surgeon Dr. Angel Gomez-Garcia will help decide which implants will be most beneficial for your breast augmentation surgery. Depending on the type of implant chosen and the individual’s preference will determine where the implant is placed.

  • Submuscluar – The implant is placed behind the pectoral muscle, which is located between the breast tissue and the breast wall.
  • Submammary – The implant is placed directly behind the breast tissue, but in front of the pectoral muscle.

RECOVERY

After surgery is complete, patients will feel tired and sore, but these symptoms can be alleviated by prescribed medication. Patients usually return to work after about a week, but should refrain from exercise and rigorous activity for at least one month.

RESULTS

Breast augmentation is a very safe and effective procedure. Improving or restoring the size and volume of the breasts is not the only reason patients are satisfied. Often times, women develop a new sense of self-confidence and are able to live without the embarrassment that they were experiencing previously.
